Project overview
AMZ Installations installed the feature ceilings for a large restaurant and bar in Vancouver, BC. The dining room is crowned by a coffered wood grid ceiling that runs the full length of the space, with curved wood-clad bulkheads over the bar and service counters. In the kitchen, we installed a black T-bar ceiling built for an active commercial kitchen.
The space
This is a big, bright room with tall glazing along one side, an open structure above and a central bar that anchors the layout. The design called for warmth and rhythm overhead, without closing off the height of the room or hiding the black open structure completely.
The challenge
A wood grid ceiling is a repeating pattern, so every beam has to line up with the next across dozens of metres. On top of that, lighting, sprinklers, speakers and mechanical services all had to fit inside the openings of the grid, and the curved bulkheads had to meet the grid cleanly.
Our solution: a coffered wood grid ceiling in Vancouver
We set out the grid from the main axes of the room so the coffers stay square and centred over the bar and seating areas. The wood members were hung level from the structure above, leaving the dark open ceiling visible through each coffer. That contrast gives the room depth while the wood brings warmth and scale. Downlights, pendants and services were coordinated so they land neatly inside the grid.
Curved bulkheads and a kitchen T-bar ceiling
Over the bar, curved wood-clad bulkheads with integrated lighting frame the service areas and soften the geometry of the grid. Behind the scenes, the kitchen received a black T-bar ceiling: a practical drop ceiling that keeps services accessible and stands up to a working kitchen environment.
The result
The restaurant now has a signature wood ceiling that defines the room from the entrance to the back wall, with clean lines, consistent spacing and every service integrated into the design. It is the kind of architectural ceiling that guests notice and photograph.
Frequently asked questions
Can a wood grid ceiling work with an exposed structure?
Yes. Leaving the structure visible through the coffers, often painted black, adds depth and keeps the room feeling tall while the wood grid brings warmth.
Do you install ceilings in commercial kitchens?
Yes. We install T-bar ceilings in commercial kitchens, keeping the services above accessible for maintenance.
