Project overview
AMZ Installations installed suspended wood slat ceilings throughout a new office in Burnaby, BC. The slats float below an exposed concrete ceiling, forming a feature in each private office and a long continuous run along the glazed corridor.
The space
The office keeps its raw concrete ceiling, with ductwork and services exposed. Private offices with glass fronts line one side of a wide corridor. The goal was to add warmth and definition without hiding the industrial character of the building.
The challenge
A floating slat ceiling under concrete has nowhere to hide. Each slat has to be parallel, evenly spaced and at the same height, and the suspension has to be secure and discreet. The layout also had to clear lights, sprinklers and the services running along the slab.
Our solution: suspended wood slats in Burnaby
In the private offices, we installed rectangular wood slat panels centred in each room, creating a warm canopy over the desk area while the concrete stays visible around the edges. Along the corridor, a continuous run of slats follows the glass offices, guiding people through the space and giving the circulation route a clear identity.
Why wood slats under concrete
Wood slat ceilings soften hard, industrial spaces and add a natural texture people respond to. Suspended as islands, they define zones without closing off the ceiling, and with an acoustic backing they can also help reduce echo.
The result
The office now combines the honesty of exposed concrete with the warmth of wood: straight lines, consistent reveals and a ceiling that ties the private offices and corridor together.
